Rasheed Abdul Rahman jailed for 27 years for murder of Mark Carroll

Rasheed Abdul Rahman, 21, has been sentenced to 27 years for the murder of Mark Carroll, 55. The killing took place on April 10, 2024, at St Martin's Gardens in Newham. Rahman was also convicted of possessing a bladed article, threatening someone with an offensive weapon, and robbery.

The Attack and Investigation

Police were called to St Martin's Gardens at 1.37pm on April 10, 2024, after reports of an unresponsive man. Officers found Mr Carroll, a grandfather, with a stab wound. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries. Rahman, who was 19 at the time of the offence, left the scene and was later arrested by officers on suspicion of murder. He was on police bail at the time of the incident.

During the two months prior to Mr Carroll's death, Rahman was involved in other incidents. He stabbed a man named Iulian Cavaliuc in East London, an attack not immediately linked by police due to CCTV delays. He was also arrested in Camden Town for attacking members of the public, attempting to assault people before brandishing a metal pole. A member of the public intervened and pushed him into a canal, as reported by MyLondon.

Sentencing and Tributes

Appearing at Wood Green Crown Court on May 27, Rahman received a 27-year sentence for the murder. He was given a concurrent four-and-a-half-year sentence for the other offences. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Clarke, who led the investigation, stated that the Metropolitan Police remains committed to pursuing those responsible for serious violence. He added that the force achieves a positive outcome in 95 per cent of murder investigations.

Mr Carroll's daughters, Danielle and Ayisha, paid tribute to their father after the sentencing. They described him as a loving father and devoted grandfather who meant the world to his family. They stated that while the sentence offers some measure of justice, it does not bring their father back. They remembered him as an innocent man who adored his granddaughters and was excited about meeting his grandson, cherishing the laughter and love shared with him.

The court heard that Rahman, a Syrian national, arrived in the UK as a child and had experienced trauma in his home country. However, this was not supported by medical evidence presented in defence of the killing.
